When I think of essential oils, I think of being overwhelmed by 100 little bottles all lined up in a row with names I’ve never even heard of before. 😨

I struggled with acne for a long time and, as I’m sure a lot of you can relate, it gets in the way of daily life.

But when I came across essential oils, I saw how simple it was to pick and choose the different types to make the most out of my skincare.

After trying so many things, I thought I might as well give oils a go – what did I have to lose?

Within only a few days, my acne was less inflamed, the redness was going down and a few of my acne scars started to fade.

I’ll admit, I thought it was just a good time for me.

Maybe I wasn’t as stressed, maybe I was wearing less makeup, maybe I was cleaning my face better.

But guess how my face looked a month later?

Completely clear!

Okay, okay, maybe I should’ve thought higher of essential oils considering how many people use them all the time, but now I’m hooked and I don’t know where I’d be without them.

For those of you who didn’t know:
An essential oil is an extract from a plant 🌱 – it’s concentrated, it’s purely containing only those plant compounds and it has it’s own set of benefits all in one bottle.

But even if you don’t have acne, essential oils can help in different ways whether that’s your skin, anti-ageing, hair, muscles, joints, sleep, weight loss, anything!

And you can’t forget about aromatherapy (the very core of using essential oils).

Certain smells and certain blends help you feel a certain way: relaxed, calm, happy, sleepy, full of energy, motivated and every other thing you want to feel.

What you’d do is add a few drops to a diffuser, but maybe you don’t want a full blown electric diffuser in your house or want to use something different.

Or maybe you just want to try it out for yourself before making a jump.

Well, I’m a sucker for pretty jewellery and what’s better than something pretty that I can diffuse essential oils in too? 😍

Yep, I wear a diffuser necklace.

All you have to do is put a few drops of your favourite oil or blend onto the felt pad, close the locket up, wear it round your neck and voila!

You smell great and you get to carry it with you, everywhere.

You can use an energising blend when you’re heading to the gym, a concentration blend for when you’re at work or school, or a calming blend when you’re going about your day.

Sounds good, right?

Chapter 2

How do you find the best quality essential oils?

Finding the best of anything isn’t easy and with the internet being filled with so many fake, low quality versions, it’s easy to not know what to do. ☹️

The best essential oils are entirely the extraction from the plant, so no added waters or vegetable oils and they aren’t fragrance oils (fragrance oils are fragrance only and have no benefits).

An easy test you can do with your essential oils are to put one drop on a clean paper towel and let it dry. If there is a stain, it’s been mixed with a vegetable oil. If there isn’t, then it’s pure.

Obviously you wouldn’t want to test them after buying, just to realise you’re now stuck with a whole bunch of fake oils – but what you can do is make sure the ingredients say it’s an entirely pure essential oil with nothing added.

The final thing you can do to ensure you are receiving quality products is to make sure you can trust the company.

Go to someone that knows about essential oils and is offering you both information about them and have stated the ingredients.

Now you know about how to find the best essential oils and all their benefits, you’re probably wondering how to use them and where to apply them on your body. Don’t worry, I’ve got that covered right here:

Chapter 3

Where To Apply Essential Oils

When trying out essential oils for the first time, it can get confusing when trying to figure out what to actually do with them.

Do you put them on your stomach? Smell them only? Can you put them on your face?

But it completely depends on what you’re using them for.

If you want to settle a stomach ache, massaging your stomach makes a lot of sense and the same goes for headaches, joint pain, menstrual cramps, etc.

But no matter what you choose to do, essential oils are highly concentrated so they can irritate your skin if you’re not careful – remember to always dilute the oil before using topically.

When you first try them out, apply it to the sole of your feet before anywhere else 👣 as it’s the least sensitive area on your body.

Doing this means you can rule out any chances of allergies and sensitivity before applying it to more delicate places, such as your face.

After making sure you won’t have a reaction, the places you can apply essential oils are endless:

  • Soles of your feet
  • Top of your feet
  • Ankles
  • Legs
  • Joints
  • Over vital organs (chest over your heart, abdomen over your stomach, etc)
  • Stomach (for muscle cramps, sickness, etc)
  • Upper back
  • Neck
  • Behind ears
  • Temples
  • Crown of your head
  • Anywhere!

Less is more when it comes to using essential oils. The high concentration means you can benefit from the smallest amounts but also means they can easily irritate your skin, so as I said before – always dilute your essential oils in a carrier oil.

Carrier oils include:

  • Coconut oil
  • Argan oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Olive oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Apricot kernel oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Babassu oil
  • Black cumin seed oil
  • Borage seed oil
  • Flaxseed oil
  • Hazelnut oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Kukui nut oil
  • Palm kernel oil
  • Pomegranate seed oil
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Rosehip seed oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Tamanu oil
  • Wheat germ oil

The oil you choose is entirely your choice.

So how should you dilute the oils?

For children and infants 👶, one drop of your chosen essential oil to every tablespoon of carrier oil will make sure it’s weak enough for their delicate skin but can also provide benefits.

Adults are usually fine with 2 drops per tablespoon, but remember to test it first to be safe.

If irritation occurs at any point when checking, immediately slather on your chosen carrier oil onto the area to dilute it and prevent the irritation from becoming worse.

So how do I use oils for certain problems?

Most of the time it will make sense how to use essential oils for a certain issue: massaging your lower abdomen for menstrual pain, your general stomach to relieve a stomach ache, temples, crown of your head and back of neck for a headache or directly to a cramp.

But what about when it comes to things like your immunity 😷 and overall mood?

Usually the best places are to apply diluted essential oils to the soles and top of your feet, wrists and chest for an overall effect. For mood boosting alone, you can always use a diffuser to be able to smell the aroma and reap the emotional benefits.

Now you know how to apply them, let’s find out exactly how you can use essential oils in your skin care:

Chapter 4

How To Use Essential Oils In Your Skin Care

We all want to improve our skin care in one way or another, whether that’s for clear skin, acne, blackheads, eczema, ageing or just overall skin health.

But many of us have tried countless things and never got any closer to our ‘skin care dreams’.

Oils may be the answer to achieving that flawless complexion you dream of and using these top essential oils, you can improve your skin in multiple ways:

  • Lavender: great for inflammation and any irritation
  • Geranium: balances out oil production and hydrates the skin
  • Basil: perfect for sensitive skin and can soothe insect bites
  • Frankincense: An anti-ageing trick is to use a few drops of this (also helps lighten discolouration)
  • Ylang Ylang: acne is scared of this for a reason – great for oily, acne-prone skin
  • Lemongrass: enlarged pores and spots all over? This is your best friend
  • Cypress: shrinks capillary damage (those little veins you can see round many people’s nostrils) – perfect for an even complexion
  • Tea tree: a common one used on acne and for oily skin
  • Juniper: natural cleanser and kills acne-causing bacteria (also great for treating cellulite)
  • Chamomile: struggling with eczema? This is great for you! Also helps with acne, dryness and sensitivity.
  • Clary sage: evens out oil production, anti-ageing and reduces puffiness in the face
  • Neroli: this one’s great for sensitive skin! It tightens up the skin for a younger look and helps your complexion glow

To use any of these in your skincare, add a drop or two to your moisturiser. Always use these diluted and test it on the sole of your feet first. If any irritation occurs, immediately slather the area in a carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, etc) to prevent it from getting worse.

If you’re looking for longer, thicker hair as well as clear skin, the next section is going to help you out loads:

Chapter 5

How To Use Essential Oils For Hair Growth

Whether you want to grow longer hair quicker or are struggling with hair loss, essential oils can be your solution.

Hair loss isn’t easy for anyone and it can feel like a huge part of you is missing, but with natural remedies you can find an easy, natural way to help yourself out.

Hair thinning/loss may be due to hormones, iron deficiency, stress, thyroid function and many other reasons – it helps to know what the root cause is so you can find a solution sooner but no matter what, minimise the stress in your life. This will always help your overall health and hair condition even by the smallest amount, so make sure to get on that (it helps to diffuse certain essential oils known for relieving stress on a regular basis).

Best oils for stress relief are:

  • Bergamot
  • Cedarwood
  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Geranium
  • Jasmine
  • Lavender
  • Marjoram
  • Neroli
  • Orange
  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Ylang Ylang

Diffuse one or more of these to help with stress relief. If you don’t have a diffuser or would rather not use one, dilute your chosen oil and apply it to your wrists and chest – don’t forget to inhale the scent when applying.

A great way to improve hair growth is to also massage your scalp with a blend of oils that encourage hair growth and overall scalp health. Try out this simple blend:

  • ⅜ cup of jojoba oil
  • 6 drops of rosemary oil
  • 6 drops of peppermint oil
  • 6 drops of ravensara oil

Combine these in a jar and everytime you use some, massage it thoroughly into your scalp.

Feel free to create your own blend using essential oils that are often used to encourage hair growth, such as:

  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Chamomile
  • Cedar
  • Clary Sage
  • Thyme
  • Lemon
  • Peppermint
  • Patchouli
  • Tea Tree
  • Vetiver
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Ravensara

To help speed up hair growth, hold your head upside down so your scalp receives even more blood flow to the roots. Massage thoroughly for at least 5 minutes and leave it on. Do this on the days you’re not washing your hair and then wash it out thoroughly the next day.

It may be best to do this in the evening 🌙, sleep with the mixture on and then shower in the morning. Keep doing this on a regular basis on each day you’re not washing your hair to see results.

If you’re not sure how to make your own blends, I explain how to use them in my eBook and give you your very own blending chart to make it easier.

And if you’re looking for more ways to use them for hair growth, I’ve even included a natural shampoo and conditioner recipe for you to use!

What else can I do to help my hair loss/growth?

You can go ahead and take supplements such as iron, zinc and biotin 💊 to see if that’s the cause of your hair loss or switch to a natural shampoo to avoid using chemicals that can damage the skin on your scalp and your roots. Remember to always be gentle when brushing your hair to avoid pulling strands out and never scratch your scalp with your nails to avoid damaging the delicate skin.

Now you know how to use them for your skin and hair, but what about your body? Can essential oils help with weight loss? The answer is yes…

Chapter 6

How To Use Essential Oils For Weight Loss

Weight loss is difficult for the majority of us and it’s no surprise we’d take up anything that can make that process even the slightest bit easier.

Essential oils are great for preventing cravings and helping you feel less hungry, making them the perfect thing to use when trying to slim down.

But don’t forget! You still need to exercise and eat in a calorie deficit to see results. 🏃

Here are the best ones for weight loss:

  • Peppermint – smell the oil before eating or add a few drops into your bath in the morning to help control the temptation to overeat during meals
  • Ginger – apply a few drops diluted in a carrier oil to your stomach to boost thermogenesis (which boosts metabolism)
  • Grapefruit – the scent of grapefruit alone helps suppress your appetite but if you go ahead and check with a professional on consuming essential oils, you can always drink a few drops of food grade grapefruit oil in water when you wake up, before meals and throughout the day to speed up fat loss
  • Bergamot – many of us resort to food when we’re feeling stressed, so by smelling the aroma of bergamot you can help yourself relax and prevent the temptation to comfort eat
  • Cinnamon – smell the aroma of cinnamon essential oil before eating to help suppress appetite and do the same after your final meal to avoid night cravings
  • Lemon – lemon juice is known for being able to boost your metabolism but use this essential oil to suppress your appetite and avoid overeating by inhaling the vapours before your meals

Any of these can be diffused, added to your bath or massaged into your skin after being diluted with a carrier oil to reap benefits, but if you plan on consuming any of these oils, make sure to check with a qualified aromatherapist or doctor to be safe.

To make it even easier to use these oils for weight loss, keep them on you all the time so you can smell them and curb cravings.

But it can be hassle to carry around a bottle of oil and having to awkwardly smell it wherever you go.

Using an essential oil diffuser necklace can make it a lot easier.

Just add a few drops to the felt pad inside the locket and close it up again.

Then wear the necklace and you’ll be able to smell the scent whenever you like!

How To Use Essential Oils To Help You Sleep

Sleeping is a common issue for a lot of us and with it becoming so normal, we tend not to do much about it. Essential oils are great at calming down stress and hormones – the top reasons for struggling to sleep at night.

So which ones are the best to use?

  • Lavender – You’ve probably heard of this oil being used often for sleep, but studies have shown that it actually does help. Diffuse it by your bed or add a few drops onto your pillow to see if it works for you.
  • Vetiver – This is a strong, earthy-smelling oil so if you’re hating the scent, feel free to add in chamomile or lavender to help.
  • Chamomile – a floral oil known for clearing your thoughts and encouraging your body to relax (in other words, exactly what you need when you’re trying to sleep!)
  • Ylang ylang – Also known for calming you down and clearing your head, ylang ylang is often used to help people sleep. Either diffuse this by your bed or dilute it with a carrier oil and rub it on your chest.
  • Bergamot – this oil helps regulate your hormone levels and calm down any stress, making it a great one to add into your sleep blend.
  • Sandalwood – this one improves your overall mood, helping you calm down and feel less stressed before sleeping. The scent is woodsy and may be exactly what you need to get a good night’s sleep.
  • Marjoram – Try this one out for better sleep and see how it works for you – you can either diffuse this or rub it onto painful muscles and joints (dilute a few drops in a carrier oil first) and inhale to help.
  • Cedarwood – great for clearing congestion, calming anxiety and stress – three things you don’t want to deal with when you’re trying to sleep!

What works for one person, won’t necessarily work with you so experiment with it! Try these each out alone or blend them together in a diluted rub/or an essential oil diffuser to reap the benefits.

So now you know about how to improve your sleep, read on if you’re a woman who cares about her health (you’re going to love this section!)…

Chapter 8

How To Use Essential Oils For Women’s Health

Many essential oils are great for women’s health by helping delay menopause, relieving PMS symptoms and regulating menstruation.

Either rub this into your abdomen or back to relieve the common pains you get or on your lower abdomen to encourage regulation.

Pregnant women should avoid using essential oils – menstrual blood flow is encouraged with many of them and this can pose a risk to your child. 👶

But for those of you who aren’t pregnant, here are the top ones many women use for their health:

  • Clary sage
  • Chamomile
  • Tea tree
  • Rosemary
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Myrrh
  • Jasmine
  • Frankincense
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemongrass
  • Rose
  • Eucalyptus
  • Sweet fennel
  • Sweet marjoram
  • Orange
  • Bergamot
  • Peppermint

Experiment with using a drop or two in a tablespoon of carrier oil and massaging it into your abdomen or using a blend – always remember to dilute your oils and use a ratio of 2 drops to every tablespoon of your base (coconut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, olive oil, etc).

Congrats, you finished the guide to essential oils! Now you know what to do (and what not to do) 😆 you can use them for your skin, hair, body, sleep, mood or anything else – the list is endless. 😃

So feel free to mix up your favourite oils for your own ‘signature blend’ or use them individually for their benefits – you can check them out at the top of this guide and don’t forget…
